Mac computers utilize a UNIX-based background architecture called CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System). When a Mac repeatedly shows a device as "Offline," refuses to clear a job from the dock, or throws a cryptic "Filter Failed" error, it means the CUPS registry has become corrupted. Simply deleting the device with the minus (-) button and adding it back rarely fixes deep CUPS corruption.

Phase 1: What is CUPS and Why Does it Crash?

CUPS translates the visual document on your screen into a rasterized language the hardware can understand. When you update your macOS (e.g., upgrading from Ventura to Sonoma), the old kernel extensions often clash with the new security protocols. The CUPS system locks the queue to prevent data loss, which results in the user being entirely unable to output documents.

Step 1.1: The GUI Reset Method
  1. Click the Apple Menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older OS).
  3. Scroll down and select Printers & Scanners.
  4. Right-click (or Control-click) anywhere in the blank space of the device list on the left side.
  5. A hidden menu will appear. Click Reset printing system...
  6. Enter your Mac administrator password to authorize the purge.

Phase 2: The Terminal Override Method

If the GUI reset fails to resolve the "Filter Failed" error, you must override the system via Terminal to force a hard purge of the spooler directory.

Step 2.1: Sudo Commands
  1. Open Finder, go to Applications > Utilities, and open Terminal.
  2. Type the exact command to cancel all background jobs: cancel -a - and press Return.
  3. Next, type the deep reset command: sudo systemsetup -setnetworktimeserver time.apple.com (Sometimes time desync causes network certificate failures).
  4. Restart your Mac immediately.

Phase 3: Re-adding as AirPrint

Once the system reboots, the CUPS registry is completely blank and healthy.

Step 3.1: Secure Bonjour Connection

Go back to Printers & Scanners and click the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax button. Wait for your device to appear on the network via "Bonjour". When selecting the driver under the "Use:" dropdown menu, avoid selecting the manufacturer's specific driver. Instead, select Secure AirPrint or AirPrint. Apple’s native AirPrint protocol bypasses traditional driver corruption entirely.
