The "Driver is Unavailable" error usually occurs after a major Windows Feature Update. The operating system attempts to merge old registry keys with new kernel architecture, resulting in corruption. Simply clicking "Uninstall" in Settings is not enough, as Windows keeps the broken driver package cached in its system repository to "help" you reinstall it quickly. We must purge this cache.
Phase 1: Standard Device Manager Removal
First, we remove the visible profile of the hardware so Windows stops trying to communicate with it actively.
Step 1.1: Revealing Hidden Devices
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager from the power menu.
- At the very top menu bar, click View and select Show hidden devices. This is crucial as corrupted ghost drivers hide in the background.
- Expand the Print queues and Printers categories.
- Right-click every instance of your problematic device and select Uninstall device. If a checkbox appears asking to "Delete the driver software for this device," ensure it is checked.
Phase 2: The Print Server UI Purge
This step accesses a legacy Windows tool that manages backend driver packages natively.
Step 2.1: Running printui.exe
Press Win + R to open the Run dialog. Type the exact command: printui.exe /s /t2 and hit Enter. This directly opens the Print Server Properties window to the Drivers tab. Locate your device's manufacturer and model in the list. Select it and click Remove at the bottom. A prompt will appear; you must select Remove driver and driver package. Click OK and confirm the deletion.
Phase 3: The Registry Spooler Sweep
Occasionally, stubborn files lock themselves in the system root folder. You must manually clear the spool folder.
Step 3.1: Command Prompt Override
- Open Command Prompt as an Administrator.
- Type
net stop spoolerand press Enter to release file locks. - Open File Explorer and navigate to
C:\Windows\System32\spool\printers. - Delete every file inside this folder (do not delete the folder itself).
- Go back to Command Prompt and type
net start spooler. - Restart your PC. When it boots up, connect your hardware, and Windows will pull a fresh, uncorrupted driver from its update catalog.
